Book Description
The Wild Garden started a revolution in garden design, appearing in the age of formal gardens and massed annuals in geometric designs. Robinson's ideas on planting were later developed by Gertrude Jekyll in her woodland garden at Munstead Wood.
About the Author
William Robinson, one of England's most famous garden designers, drew his inspiration from the traditional cottage garden that had been long neglected by the fashionable landscape designers of the 19th century. He rejected the artificial and the formal and instead embraced simple gardens of perennials and wildflowers. His influence first swept England, then America, and ultimately had a worldwide impact. The wild garden and cut flower garden, for example—were popularized by Robinson, who strongly believed that the natural aesthetic was far superior to the rigid design system of the Victorian age. The English Flower Garden, went through fifteen editions during William Robinsons lifetime. He died just before his 97th birthday.
