Book Description
Journey through the calendar year with three top quilt designers and teachers. These special friends have designed a quilt pattern for every month and combined their diverse styles to create unique and exciting new designs. They also share fabric selection ideas, how-to sections on Stack-n-Whack and Appli-bond, and techniques and tips to use all year round. Joan Shay's designs feature her easy and popular three-dimensional Appli-bond method for creating flowers, birds, and fish. Bethany Reynolds presents several fun, new Stack-n-Whack designs -- a method that has taken the quilt world by storm. Karen Combs adds her special insight with quilts of illusion that delight the senses. From enchanting applique to dazzling patchwork, the great variety of projects offered will bring quilting excitement throughout the year. AUTHORBIO: Karen Combs is an internationally-known quilter, teacher, author, and designer whose students nominated her for Quilt Teacher of the Year in 1995 and 2000. In high demand as a teacher (she began teaching quilting in 1989), Karen encourages her students, makes learning fun, and makes the complex easy to understand! Karen is fascinated with optical illusions in quilts, a fascination that has become the subject of her many workshops, magazine articles, and books. AUTHORBIO: Joan, who was taught to sew on a Singer treadle machine by her grandmother, has been a quilter for many years. She has her own pattern company, Petal Play, which she operates from her home in Massachusetts. In addition, she has taught and lectured extensively throughout the country. She has appeared on television on the PBS show "Quilting from the Heartland" with Sharlene Jorgenson, and on the HGTV program "Simply Quilts" with Alex Anderson. AUTHORBIO: Bethany Reynolds is best known as the originator of Stack-n-Whack, but her design interests don't stop there. She has a knack for finding ways to get great results with less work, and she loves sharing her tricks with quilters worldwide. At home on the coast of Maine, Bethany and her husband, Bill, produce a line of specialty rulers and patterns under their BSR Design Inc. label. REVIEW: The Midwest Book Review says: 'In 3 Quilters Celebrate The 4 Seasons: By the Calendar Girls, Karen Combs, Bethany Reynolds, Joan Shay (three famous quilting professionals) collaborate to provide their specialties showcasing over a dozen quilt projects emphasizing diverse patterns and styles and approaches, providing a diversity of original styles. The color photos are wonderful embellishments.'

From the Author
Many months ago, one of us suggested we write a book together. This idea met with immediate and enthusiastic agreement. We were all seasoned authors and designers, and we were already becoming fast friends. In no time, a concept and an outline had been scribbled down on scrap paper. We knew we could do this, and we couldn't wait to get started!

After we calmed down enough to think rationally, practical concerns arose. How were we going to combine our diverse styles? Would we try to do "Appli-bonded Stack-n-Whack Quilts of Illusion?" Or would we each do our own designs, and trust the fantastic staff at the American Quilter's Society to pull everything together? We decided to steer a middle course. We would each be responsible for the projects for 4 months, to showcase our individual areas of expertise. At the same time, we agreed to learn more about each other's techniques and incorporate them into our own designs whenever we could. Exploring the possibilities of this "cross-pollination" has been a great opportunity to stretch our design muscles. In some cases, we found we could combine techniques in a single project. For other projects, we could offer a second version of the main project, showing two different approaches to the design. And we couldn't resist the challenge of combining all our talents to make one quilt, FORGET-ME-KNOTS.

Collaborating on this book has been a new and wonderful experience for us. Each of us contributed our individual knowledge and skills, and we learned so much from each other. You will add your own unique quilt experiences as you create these projects. Our hope is that you will have as much fun making them as we had designing them for you. Perhaps you'll try one with a friend. You will strengthen your friendship as you share your skills. And remember, friendships, like quilts, are always in season!
