Book Description
Imagine a paper-cut paradise. The captivating beauty of the Hawaiian Islands unfolds before your eyes with these original Hawaiian designs. Each applique pattern reveals an intricate shape that is representative of the splendor and culture of the islands. Bold graphics, contrasting fabrics, and graceful quilting characterize projects, such as Hibiscus Orchid Lei and Winds of Change. Polynesian design and new quilting patterns allow you to go beyond the typical echo quilting. Awed by the beauty of the islands and fascinated by their handwork, Ms. Fleming began making Hawaiian quilts more than 20 years ago. Over a dozen of her original quilt designs are featured, including an extraordinary variety of folded cutwork patterns and quilting designs that reflect a traditional approach to this style of quiltmaking. A brief overview of Hawaiian quilting and a glossary of Hawaiian terms will help you give special meaning to your quilt creation. Celebrate the history, philosophy, and natural beauty of an alluring locale in this exotic collection of patterns. AUTHORBIO: Vicky Fleming's orientation to the tropics began at an early age. When she was in third or fourth grade in Michigan, her teacher asked if east was to the left or right. Vicky answered, "Left." The teacher wouldn't budge on insisting that Vicky had given the wrong answer. The teacher hadn't specified "on the map," however, and in Vicky's mind, she was standing in Michigan looking toward Florida, so east was indeed on the left. REVIEW: Imagine a paper-cut paradise! The captivating beauty of the Hawaiian Islands unfolds before your eyes with these original Hawaiian designs.
