A Collector's Guide to Black Glass 2
Editorial Reviews
From the Publisher
Author Marlena Toohey writes, "It has been ten years since my first book on black glass was published! In that time, I have received hundreds of letters and phone calls from collectors who were glad to finally have some reference to their own unique collections of black glass. While they were thrilled to have this information, I was also informed it was still not enough.
The present volume, a labor of love taking several years, shows nearly 1,200 pieces of black glass, with few repeats from the first book. Featuring black glass from the early 1900s to the present, Book 2 illustrates almost every conceivable shapeanimals, perfume bottles, tableware, kitchenware, jewelry, lamps, miniatures, plates, stands, and much more. Companies run the gamut from Avon to Westmoreland. Companies receiving special attention include Boyd, Cambridge, Fenton, Imperial, L.E. Smith, Tiara, Tiffin and Viking. Of special interest is the significant number of imports from Italy, China, Taiwan, and other countries that are identified.
About the Author
Marlena Toohey has seriously collected black glass for over 30 years. It all began with a 22-piece luncheon set she found in an antiques shop while on vacation with her parents in South Dakota. The shop owner noticed how Marlena marveled at the deep amethyst color of these six-sided dishes with matching stemware, and offered her the entire set for just $10.00. Within four years, her new hobby had turned into a nice collection and eventually into an obsession.
Since that time, if it's black glass, Marlena has probably found it. Putting as much value on rare reproductions as vintage originals, her philosophy remains "you don't have to know who made a piece to know that you like it." She currently resides in Colorado with husband, John, and continues to search for that next piece of black glass she doesn't have, and just can't live without.
