Collecting African American History
Editorial Reviews
Book Description
Collecting African American History, by esteemed dealer Elvin Montgomery, is the first comprehensive illustrated book to offer in-depth information about these artifacts and-more importantly-place them in their original cultural context. Through the study of hundreds of collectibles from every key period of U.S. history, the book reveals the story of African Americans as told through objects. In "Understanding African American Collectibles," Montgomery offers practical advice for the collector plus a timeline of African American history. Next he looks at distinctive artifacts and collectibles according to topic, including slavery, politics, music, sports, art, spirituality, and education. The book closes with financial advice for collectors in this field. This book is not a price guide. Rather, it is a lavishly illustrated book that will assist readers interested in interpreting and accumulating items that reflect the realities, rather than the myths, of black history and culture.
