"These women took six road trips from our nation's capital to thrift stores and antique shops in Philadelphia, Raleigh, N.C., and elsewhere, poking and picking the merchandise and chatting up the locals. Let them regale you with their thrifting exploits."
Amy Graves, Boston Globe, July 17, 2004
"Looking hip and fresh doesn't mean having to break the bank. And now, thanks to a new book, students won't have to worry about spending much money on gas either.
'Dirt Cheap, Real Good: A Highway Guide to Thrift Stores in the Washington D.C. Area' is a valuable accessory to anyone with an open mind and an adventurous spirit.
Chriss Slevin and Leah Smith take readers on a road trip through some of the best-kept secrets in cheap clothing and furniture items from Maryland to West Virginia.... Aside from the monetary aspects of shopping for less, the two discovered a veritable culture on the road, with oddities and interesting places to eat, most of which are mentioned in their guide with helpful tips and directions."
Kristen Bott, The Towerlight (UMD - Baltimore campus newspaper), September 16, 2004

A new book, written by Chriss Slevin and Leah Smith, two 29-year-old women, has done all the research for you. 'Dirt Cheap, Real Good: A Highway Guide to Thrift Stores in the Washington, D.C. Area' lists hundreds of thrift stores on six different driving routes, all using Washington as the starting point....The book features more than 300 thrift stores in Washington, Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and North Carolina."

"Chriss Slevin lives in Brooklyn and Leah Smith lives in Boston, but don't even think about calling them ritzy. They're dirt cheap. And for one store in the town of Mt. Jackson, that is a real good thing. 'Dirt Cheap, Real Good: A Highway Guide to Thrift Stores in the Washington, D.C., Area,' which Slevin and Smith authored, hit bookshelves in June. Logging about 4,000 miles last year while traveling six different routes from Washington, D.C., to various places, the two passed through seven Mid-Atlantic states in search of the best bargain shopping in small towns and big cities, Philadelphia and Baltimore among them. Slevin and Smith visited about 400 stores, 300 of which made the book."
Preston Knight, Northern Virginia Daily, September 1, 2004

Darragh Doiron, Port Arthur News, April 21, 2004
"I can kiss the authors of this book for putting together the must-have list of places to visit within a short drive of DC. This is now a permanent fixture in my glove compartment!"
--Renee Piechocki, thrifting enthusiast, Pittsburgh PA
"What a wonderful resource--like a Zagat's restaurant guide for the thrift-minded! When visiting a new town, it's hard to figure out where the thrift stores are, much less how good they are. Leah and Chriss have done the leg work by helping you maximize your thrifting time and dollars. It's an excellent book for road trips, giving you a reason to get off the interstate highways besides just buying gas and lottery tickets."
--Skip Elsheimer, film collector extraordinaire, Raleigh, NC
"As a spoken word and dance performance artist, I've had to rely on thrift stores to help create my costumes. But I don't have any time to waste knowing where to shop. Dirt Cheap, Real Good enables me to get to the goods without using up valuable brain power."
--Laurel Kirtz, expert thrifter, Boston, MA
