Book Description
For a number of years, Dr. Stark has been observing and working with police dogs and police dog handlers, with a view to sorting out some of the many misperceptions and myths that prevail in the world of working dogs. Through this unique collection of her thought-provoking articles and photographs, she shares her observations and analyses in a way that is easily understood by those who work with and rely on police dogs. The title of this book derives from one of the sources of frustration experienced by many handlers and trainers, stemming from the failure of administrators to understand that dogs are not just another piece of equipment, that the strong bond between the handler and this living, thinking, feeling "equipment" is essential to safe deployment, that adequate preparation takes months rather than hours or days, and that training must be throughout the career of the team, so as not to put handlers, dogs and public at risk.
